US-only, turnarounds, contracting, and funding-stale — kept for the record, not the shortlist
updated 2026-07-04 · the demoted half of the employer catalogue

Criteria

The live catalogue keeps EU-native or genuine-remote-EU employers who are healthy and hiring now. This archive holds everyone who failed one of those three walls: US-only (EU = relocate to the US), turnaround / contracting (walking in the wrong year), or funding-stale / small (verify runway first). Kept for reference — revisit if a specific EU req or a fresh round changes the picture. Back to the shortlist: the live catalogue →

Fit flags: 🔴 skip for this candidate as things stand · 🟡 watch — archived on one wall, but a live req or fresh round could pull it back to the shortlist. Source: bio-data map §4 avoid/caution + the Ginkgo deep-dive (both 2026-07-02).

Turnaround / contracting — wrong year to walk in

Real engineering, sometimes even an EU footprint — but the company is cutting, not growing. Hiring here is contraction-hiring.

CompanyRegionWhy archivedFit
Ginkgo Bioworks🇺🇸 US (Boston)The anchor — turnaround-stage, rev −49% YoY (Q1'26), post-1:40 reverse split, ~35% headcount cut. No EU footprint, no visa language, ~15 roles all Boston. Ruby/Python/JS (Rust only in the tiny gen tool). Interesting autonomous-lab scheduling work, but the geo + stack + company-risk walls are decisive. the honest read →🔴 skip
Recursion🇺🇸 US (SLC) + Oxford, UKPetabyte "Recursion OS" phenomics platform — biggest lab-data flywheel by scale, and it has an Oxford site. But two ~20% cuts, runway-driven consolidation; hiring is contraction.🟡 watch
Novo Nordisk🇪🇺 EU (Bagsværd, DK)EU-native and would otherwise fit — but ~9,000 jobs cut (11%, ~5k in DK). Deprioritize this year; revisit once the restructure settles.🟡 watch
Illumina🇺🇸 US + Cambridge, UK~12% cut over the trailing year, Grail impairment, turnaround/margin mode — not growth-hiring. Aim only if a specific Cambridge-UK DRAGEN req fits.🟡 watch
Roche / Genentech (US gRED)🇺🇸 US (S. SF)Good data-org thesis, but US gRED in multi-round restructuring (~350+ R&D cuts). Aim Basel/pRED instead — avoid SSF.🟡 watch

US-only — relocation required

Solid companies, some with genuine systems work — but no EU relocation story. "EU" here means moving to the US, not staying in Europe. Skip unless you're open to that move.

CompanyRegionWhy archivedFit
10x Genomics🇺🇸 US (Pleasanton)The Rust winner — verified production Rust (OSS genomic libs, Go+Rust backend), Cell/Space/Xenium pipelines, stable balance sheet. Archived only on geography: US-only. Worth a US relocation if Rust is the priority.🟡 watch
TetraScience🇺🇸 US (Boston, ~39% remote)Purest "lab-data-platform-for-AI" peer to Ginkgo Datapoints — instrument connectors + data harmonization. But no EU story, and a 2026 Series-B extension is a momentum caution.🟡 watch
Insitro🇺🇸 US (S. SF)Automated wet-lab data ↔ ML platform, imaging pipelines, feature stores — strong Datapoints-flavor, systems is first-class. US-only ($700M+ raised).🟡 watch
Chai Discovery🇺🇸 US (SF)Chai structure-prediction; pure SWE Infrastructure seat, 0→1 scale-ups, OpenAI-backed. US-only.🔴 skip
Element Biosciences🇺🇸 USUS-only, and a TS/React/Electron web-heavy stack — wrong shape for a systems/Rust mind even setting geography aside.🔴 skip
Ultima Genomics🇺🇸 USSequencing-instrument data at scale, but US-only, no EU relocation door.🔴 skip
PacBio🇺🇸 US (Menlo Park)Long-read sequencing platform — US-only.🔴 skip
Merck🇺🇸 USUS-centric and selective visa and a 2028 Keytruda cliff overhang. Three strikes.🔴 skip
Tempus🇺🇸 US (Chicago)US-only clinical-genomics data. No EU relocation story.🔴 skip
Guardant Health🇺🇸 US (Palo Alto)US-only liquid-biopsy clinical-genomics. No EU door.🔴 skip
Freenome🇺🇸 US (S. SF)US-only early-cancer-detection clinical-genomics. No EU door.🔴 skip
Nucleus🇺🇸 USUS-only consumer clinical-genomics. No EU door.🔴 skip

Funding-stale / small — verify runway before engaging

No fresh round in a long time; small headcount. The technology may be interesting but the company-risk is the wall. Confirm a live raise or a real board before spending effort.

CompanyRegionWhy archivedFit
Latch Bio🇺🇸 US (SF)Cloud platform for biology — a robot-lab / lab-OS neighbour with real data-infra, but no fresh round since Series A (Jun 2022). Funding-stale.🟡 watch
Form Bio🇺🇸 US (Dallas)~35 employees, $30M Series A (2022), no round since — highest company-risk on the list.🔴 skip
Color🇺🇸 US (Burlingame)More product than omics-data, mid-pivot, stale 2021 valuation. Wrong shape and shaky footing.🔴 skip
Revisiting the archive. A page moves back to the live catalogue when the wall that demoted it falls: a US-only shop opens a real EU hub, a turnaround posts growth and stops cutting, or a stale name closes a fresh round. Until then these stay here — on the record, off the shortlist.
