Biotech / techbio VCs that run an in-house company-building / “labs” arm and hire engineers into it — founding engineer, platform/data engineer, engineer-in-residence, or spinout CTO. Ranked for an EU systems engineer (Go/Rust, high-throughput data), EU-reachable first. compiled 2026-07-25 · companion to the Live Openings & Opportunity Catalogue
TL;DR
Genuine engineer-entry build arms: Deep Science Ventures (paid technical “Founding Analyst” → spin out), Foresite Labs (open Senior Data Engineer at the incubator), 8VC Build (EIR that explicitly wants software engineers), Sofinnova MD Start (build team that names engineers). EU, no relocation: Sofinnova (Paris), Apollo (Berlin), i&i Prague (local). UK needs a visa: DSV, OSE, CIC. Top 3 now: (1) DSV — direct apply, technical-founder path; (2) Foresite Labs — live data-engineer req, cleanest fit but SF; (3) Sofinnova MD Start / Biovelocita — EU-inside build arm that hires engineers.
what counts as a “labs arm”
A VC that builds companies in-house (studio / foundry / incubator / EIR program) rather than only writing cheques — and, critically, one where an engineer can join the build team (evidence: EIR/founding-engineer roles, a platform team, past engineer hires), not just a scientist or investor. Each entry below is marked verified where the page was fetched live; ambiguous ones sit in the research-further queue.
Tier A — EU-reachable
1. Deep Science Ventures — London UK · Skilled Worker visa
Venture creator (58 companies built). Hires engineers: yes — “Founding Analyst” open to deep technical expertise; scopes ~12 months then spins out a NewCo with DSV funding and you as founder/CTO. Computation vertical wants technical co-founders. Direct apply, no warm intro.apply → · jobs board
2. Sofinnova — MD Start / Biovelocita — Paris FR · EU, no visa · 1h flight
Two in-house creation arms; Biovelocita (€165m) launched Signadori Bio Mar 2025. Partial — MD Start team explicitly names “engineering professionals”; no public ad. Submit a project + cold-pitch as technical co-founder (Matthieu Coutet, Antoine Papiernik). sofinnovapartners.com
3. Oxford Science Enterprises — Oxford UK · visa
Venture-building engine, 8–10 NewCos/yr from Oxford IP; recurring EIR cohort. Yes (technical EIRs) — recent CTO-background EIRs; Deep Tech team recruits AI/compute founders. No public form — connect@oxfordsciences.com + LinkedIn to the Deep Tech partners.who / EIRs · jobs
4. Cambridge Innovation Capital — Cambridge UK · visa
EIR programme (Aug 2025) to spin Cambridge IP; £100m backing. Yes — rolling cohort ~6, includes ex-CTOs. No public form — warm intro via Cambridge Enterprise or direct.EIR programme
5. Apollo Health Ventures — Berlin DE · EU, no visa · ~4h from Prague
“Venture Lab” co-founds ~1/3 of portfolio. Unclear — no engineer role found; small team assembles external founding teams. Cold-pitch GPs (Nils Regge, Ole Mensching) as technical co-founder on the data angle.apollo.vc/career
6. Flagship / Pioneering Intelligence — London (partnerships) / Cambridge MA (eng)
AI/data arm building shared ML infra across 100+ originated companies. Yes (US) — hires ML/MLOps/data engineers, but the eng roles are Kendall Sq; London is partnerships, not eng yet. roles · FlagshipUK@flagshippioneering.com
7. Forbion — Naarden NL / Munich · EU · 1.5h
~1/3 of Fund VII (€890m) is co-founded NewCos. No evidence of engineer/EIR roles — builds around scientific assets. Monitor the board; approach MPs for a genomics NewCo.careers
8. i&i Prague — Prague CZ · zero relocation
Incubator/investor for scientist-founders. No engineer-hire path — but your best local network node: approach directly as a founding-CTO candidate seeking a scientific partner. iniprague.com
Tier B — US relocation only
Foresite Labs — SF + Boston
Incubator that co-built Xaira ($1B); assembles data scientists + engineers into NewCos. Strongest role fit — live Senior Data Engineer ($185–221k), bio data only “nice to have.” Direct apply. careers
8VC Build — Austin TX
29 companies built since 2016; Life Sciences is a Build sector. Yes — EIR program explicitly recruits “full-stack software engineers to explore white spaces, build prototypes.” Frame a life-sci data-infra thesis. 8vc.com/build
Lux Labs — NY + SF
$100M company-creation arm (2024), AI×Biology. Partial — EIR confirmed historically, founder-track, no open eng req. Warm-intro heavy: info@luxcapital.com with an AI×bio data-infra thesis. jobs
Playground Global — Palo Alto
“Investment firm + engineering lab,” engineered-biology sector. Some in-house studio eng; no documented EIR. Apply direct; info@playground.global. careers
Third Rock Ventures — Boston + SF
Proven concept-to-clinic builder; EIR program. EIR = scientist-operators, not systems engineers — long shot, needs a strong biotech-data thesis. jobs
Dropped (not a builder / no engineer path): ARCH (engineers go into spinouts, not the fund), a16z Bio+Health (community, not employer), Dimension, NFX Bio, Cantos, Compound, Jeito, EMBL/EMBLEM, BioInnovation Institute, Balderton (EIR = C-suite ops), Index/Hoxton. Air Street (2-person VC) and Nucleate (nonprofit) are useful network nodes, not employers.
Not a fit: Third Rock EIR (scientist-operators), Balderton EIR (C-suite operators), a16z American Dynamism Fellowship (investment rotation).
How to land it
Realistic route for an outside engineer with no bio network, best odds first:
Cold apply where the req is real and role-first. Foresite Labs (live Sr Data Eng) and DSV (Founding Analyst) take direct applications and don't require domain bio — trading-grade throughput/latency/pipeline skills are the pitch.
Cold-pitch as a technical co-founder where the build arm is real but the engineer role isn't advertised: Sofinnova/Biovelocita, Apollo, CIC, OSE. Bring a concrete thesis (bio data infrastructure, GMP/biomanufacturing pipelines, genomics-scale throughput) — they want a thesis, not a CV.
Portfolio-company-first is the pragmatic backdoor. Most of these firms drop engineers into their NewCos, not the fund. Watch spinout launches and target the founding-engineer slot at the newly-formed company — lower bar, same build energy.
Warm intro beats cold everywhere. i&i Prague (local) + Nucleate events to meet scientist co-founders seeking a technical partner. A visible portfolio (genomics/bio data pipelines, open source, a talk) manufactures the intro.
Apollo Health Ventures — no engineer req found (team ~38). LinkedIn filter by “engineer”; email internship@apollo.vc asking if Venture Lab embeds platform engineers.
Playground Global — studio eng confirmed but no EIR scheme documented. Filter careers for non-portfolio reqs; email info@playground.global.
Kurma / Forbion — “venture builder” claims, no engineer path surfaced. Monitor Forbion greenhouse; check Kurma spinouts for founding-engineer reqs.
Walled / no-form pages — access path: OSE EIR (LinkedIn to Deep Tech partners; connect@oxfordsciences.com) · CIC EIR (Cambridge Enterprise intro) · Lux Labs EIR (info@luxcapital.com, warm-intro only).
People to contact: Matthieu Coutet & Antoine Papiernik (Sofinnova/Biovelocita) · Nils Regge & Ole Mensching (Apollo GPs) · Nathan Benaich (Air Street, London — network node for TechBio founder intros).
Verify next: Foresite Sr Data Eng still open + visa posture · whether Flagship's London hub has posted any eng role (the only EU-inside big-firm eng entry if so) · DSV live Founding Analyst / Computation openings + visa language.
Path in order of odds: cold-apply the two role-first arms (Foresite, DSV) · cold-pitch technical-co-founder at the thesis-driven ones (Sofinnova, CIC, OSE) · or backdoor via a founding-engineer seat at one of their fresh spinouts. A visible high-throughput bio-data portfolio is what makes any of these land.
